Sawdust Conveying

CFW has been designing, building and installing both high-efficiency fans and material handling fans for decades. We make dilute phase (lean phase) pneumatic conveying systems according to the conditions of the site and the specifications of the customer, and provide a range of robust standard fans and components. Custom fans are also available.

Bulk wood products such as sawdust can be effectively conveyed from separation equipment to containers and silos using pneumatic conveying systems. Dilute phase conveying is used for wood materials that tend to compress when pressure is applied. Typically, low-pressure systems with short distances are used.

Some of the benefits include:

  • Dust is contained in an enclosed system, resulting in a cleaner system.
  • Flexible pipe layouts.
  • Compactness.
  • Reduced maintenance costs owing to the lower number of moving parts.
  • Simple conveying to multiple destinations.

High-efficiency blowers are a key element of a sawdust conveying system, since blower systems can consume up to 35% of the power used by secondary wood product plants. In many cases, energy savings by using selective fan speed reductions are feasible. This is done by installing a variable-speed drive.

Cyclones or baghouses are usually used to remove the material from an airstream.

Various fans are used to convey wood products. The airfoil fan is the most efficient kind in general use, with mechanical efficiencies of up to about 90%. Only clean air should pass through, as it does not tolerate material well. Backward inclined fans are somewhat less sensitive to low amounts of dust than airfoil fans and are only slightly less efficient (maximum 85%). Material handling fans may be either flat-bladed (paddle-wheel) or radial-tip fans. Flat blade fans are not very efficient but are suitable where all material will pass through the fan. Radial-tip fans are slightly more efficient and can handle fine material. The fan is often found between a cyclone and a baghouse.
